The Central American River Turtle (Dermatemys mawii) is one of the most critically endangered freshwater turtles in the world. The main threats for this species are human-induced alterations of its habitat and its high demand in the pet, medicine and food trade. D. mawii is the largest river turtle in Central America, forms part of the Mayan biocultural patrimony, and plays an important ecological role in aquatic ecosystems; however, many aspects of its biology and natural history are still unknown. The conservation scenario for this turtle is very complex. Synergistic work of different actors at the local and international level are necessary to ensure effective measures and long-term commitment are implemented in its distribution area. We review important biological, ecological and conservation aspects of D. mawii based on published literature, contributions from specialists and our own experience to encourage research and conservation actions for this iconic species. eng
