Reproduction of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley in exposed eggs of the coffee berry borer, Hypo the nemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) was compared with two conventional lepidopteran hosts: Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier) and Galleria mellonella (L.). T. pretiosum showed higher levels of parasitism in 1-2 day old and 2-3 day old H. hampei eqqs than in younger (< 1 day) or older (3 -4 day) eggs. The initial incidence of parasitism of H . hampei eggs was promising but high mortality in the immature stages and a low prevalence of adult emergence resulted in poor overall levels of reproduction. The pattern of development of T. pretiosum in H. hampei eggs was similar to that observed in the other hosts. Attempts to improve parasitoid reproduction by offering H. hampei eggs to sequential generations of T. pretiosum that had previously developed in H. hampei eggs, failed after 3 generations. Adult female T. pretiosum that developed in H. hampei eggs were smaller and had lower fecundity than conspecifics that had developed in the other host species. Given the choice of H. hampei or S. cerealella eggs, parasitoids that had developed in H. hampei showed higher levels of parasitism in S. cerealella suggesting this to be a preferred host. We conclude that at present, T. pretiosum does not appear to have a great potential as a novel agent for biological control of the coffee berry borer. eng
