The vegetative growth of a Mexican strain of Auricularia fuscosuccinea was studied. Mycelial growth was evaluated on 4 solid synthetic media: malt extract (MEX), potato dextrose, yeast glucose, and water agar; 3 natural media: agar-Inga (AI), agar-Leucaena (AL), and agar-Gliricidia (AG); and several agro-industrial by-products: maize cobs, sugar cane bagasse, sawdust, wood shavings and a mixture (1:1) of coffee pulp and sawdust. The agro-industrial by-products were also evaluated with the addition of 3% powdered Leucaena leaves. Best mycelial growth was obtained using the natural media (AI, AL, AG and MEX). The growth on maize cobs was good, and was improved by the addition of powdered Leucaena leaves. An increase of mycelial growth was observed when up to 10% of maize cobs were substituted by coffee pulp; however, higher concentrations of coffee pulp limited mycelial growth. eng
