Autor de Sobre la desigualdad económica, Pobreza y hambrunas, Sobre ética y economía, La calidad de vida y La mujer inexistente, entre otros libros. En 1997 recibió el Premio Internacional de Cataluña. Especializado en el estudio de la pobreza y de las hambrunas, fue proclamado ganador del Premio Nobel de Economía en 1998.
