The species is here understood as encompassing all nominal subspecies described by Hubbs (1936, 1938) and other authors, and elevated to species status without a comprehensive analysis in some works (e.g. by Říčan et al. 2016). A recent morphological and genetic review found no support for more than one species (Barrientos-Villalobos et al. 2018). Several of the Hubbsian subspecies have been listed as vulnerable (e.g. by Jelks et al. 2008), but these assessments do not refer to Mayaheros urophthalmus proper. The species is widely distributed and can be locally abundant. It is also tolerant of wide environmental variations and can use diverse trophic resources. However, given the impact of pollution, invasive species and habitat destruction in some parts of its range, it should continue to be listed as Least Concern. Native: Belize; Guatemala; Honduras; Mexico (Campeche, Chiapas, Oaxaca - Introduced, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Veracruz, Yucatán); Nicaragua Introduced: United States (Florida)
