The 28 chapters in this book on sampling techniques for arthropods associated with soyabean have been contributed by some 32 authors and are presented in 8 sections. The information is intended to enable the user to determine which kind of pest is present, how many there are per unit area and how many there need to be before economic injury occurs, in order to develop rational control measures. More than 100 arthropod pests have already been recorded from the crop. Both highly accurate absolute population estimates and less accurate, though still reliable, relative estimates of population densities are considered, and an important feature of the book is a section devoted to sampling methods for natural control agents, since knowledge of these biological control agents is important for the development and application of integrated control. The first section, which is concerned with concepts and techniques, includes chapters on soyabean growth and the assessment of damage by arthropods, general sampling methods for above-ground populations of arthropods on soyabean, an introduction to sampling theory, sequential sampling plans for soyabean arthropods, and sequential estimation of soyabean arthropod population densities. Other sections are devoted to lepidopterous defoliators, to coleopterous defoliators, other foliage feeders, underground feeders, stem and axil feeders and pod feeders. The section on natural control agents includes chapters on sampling parasites of soyabean insect pests, sampling predacious Hemiptera on soyabean, sampling ground predators in soyabean rields, sampling spiders in soyabean fields and sampling pathogens of soyabean insect pests.
