The composition of the community of the hyperiid amphipods collected in the southwestern sector of the Sargasso Sea was analyzed from zooplankton samples obtained at different depths (0-400 m) using two different collecting methods, the Isaacs-Kidd midwater trawl (IKMT) and a standard plankton net (pN). In total, 88 species were recorded, generating the most comprehensive data set on the diversity of this group in the Sargasso Sea. Thirty-five species are new records for the North-western Atlantic. The most abundant species were Hyperioides longipes Chevreux, 1900, Anchylomera blossevillei Milne-Edwards, 1830, and Paratyphis parvus Claus, 1887. Important differences in the community structure (density, diversity of species) were detected by a dissimilitude analysis; these were related mainly to the sampling method and depth. The IKMT was able to collect a greater number of species than the pN even at the same depths; however, hyperiid densities in samples obtained by the pN were approximately six-fold higher. A tentative group of dominant species is provided, although it is likely that new collections in the area, particularly at deeper layers, will increase the number of species recorded in the Sargasso Sea. eng
