Maxillopodan crustaceans are represented by different taxa in freshwater ecosystems. The most conspicuous and widespread are the copepods, usually dominant in the littoral, limnetic and benthic invertebrate biotas. The main aspects on their morphology, biology and ecology are treated in this contribution, including specific sections on their diversity and conservation and the adaptative capacities that led them to become the most succesful crustaceans on Earth. A second group of maxillopodans, the Branchiura, are widespread parasites of fish; they are a particularly serious threat when present in fish farms. Their interesting life history and ecology are also treated here together with the different approaches to control their populations. A third group, not usually considered in surveys of freshwater biotas, is the Cirripedia, comprising the barnacles, which are marine forms. Only one or two species of highly euryhaline species are found in freshwater, but their interesting life cycle and morphology, involving a deep structural transformation from a planktonic naupliae to a benthic functional organism, are described in this work. Their high competitivity allows them to dominate the benthic communities and are responsible of fouling-related problems in brackish and freshwater systems. A section on the collection, study and culture techniques of these groups of maxillopodan crustaceans is also included.
