Los búhos y lechuzas han ejercido una fuerte y controvertida fascinación en los seres humanos. Estas aves se consideran de mal agüero, y por ello una amenaza, como se ha documentado en varios lugares del mundo, entre ellos Colombia y África tropical. En este estudio analizamos los saberes populares sobre los búhos en mujeres y hombres adultos, y adultos y jóvenes de tres poblaciones rurales (veredas) del suroccidente de Manizales, Caldas, Colombia. Los hombres adultos mostraron un mejor conocimiento sobre los búhos que las mujeres, al igual que los adultos sobre los jóvenes. Este conocimiento en los adultos fue obtenido a través del campo, mientras que los jóvenes a través de la televisión y las revistas. En general, el conocimiento sobre los nombres populares de los búhos y su historia natural (hábitat y alimentación) es amplio. La mayoría de las actitudes y percepciones hacia los búhos fueron positivas, aunque el 15% de los informantes mencionó conocer a alguien que mató algún búho. Los programas educativos deberán incrementar el conocimiento público sobre los búhos, difundiendo una información más clara y objetiva sobre este grupo y sus beneficios al ecosistema. Español

Owls have had a strong fascination on human beings. These birds were considered ominous, and therefore a threat, as has been documented in several parts of the world, including Colombia and tropical Africa. In this study, we analyzed the popular knowledge on owls by adult men and women, adults and youth from from three rural populations southwest Manizales, Caldas, Colombia. Most of the adults mentioned have knowledge of owls from the fi while young people from television and magazines. Knowledge of owls is broad, both in popular names as in natural history (habitat and feeding). Adult men had a better knowledge of owls than women, as well as adults compared to young people. Most of the attitudes and perceptions to the owls were positive, although 15% of informants knew someone that has killed some of them.
