El propósito de este artículo es exponer la biografía del médico francés François Corroy (1777-1836) que llegó a la Nueva España en 1803, sobre todo, acerca de su afición por el coleccionismo de antigüedades, opiniones sobre el origen de las misteriosas ruinas que permanecían escondidas entre la selva sureña y la correspondencia que tuvo con sabios del Lyceum of Natural History of New York (Estados Unidos) y la Société de Géographie de París (Francia). Asimismo, se verá la competencia que tuvo con otro viajero y coleccionista, Frédérick Waldeck (1776/78-1875), las exploraciones que hicieron en Palenque y la definición de antigüedad de las ruinas en el contexto del premio de una medalla de oro y 2 400 francos para el mejor trabajo que demostrara la autenticidad de aquellos vestigios, emitido por la Société de géographie en 1826. The purpose of the text is to expose the biography of the French physician François Corroy (1777-1836) who arrived to New Spain in 1803, especially, his fondness for collecting antiquities, opinions on the origin of the mysterious ruins that remained hidden among the southern jungle of Mexico, and the correspondence he had with scholars from the Lyceum of Natural History of New York (United States) and the Société de Géographie de Paris (France). Also, will be seen the competition he had with another traveler and collector, Frédérick Waldeck (1776/78-1875), the explorations they made in Palenque and the definition of antiquity of the ruins in the context of the prize of a gold medal and 2 400 francs for the best work that demonstrated the authenticity of those vestiges, issued by the Société de géographie in 1826.
