Originally published in 1985, this is the second of a series of handbooks sponsored by the Estuarine and Brackish-Water Sciences Association. The first handbook (Estuarine Hydrography and Sedimentation, edited by K. R. Dyer, 1979) dealt with methods for studying physical aspects of estuaries. The book is intended as an introduction to the techniques used to collect and interpret chemical data from estuaries. Written at a level suitable for readers without an extensive knowledge of chemistry, the book examines the aims and techniques of chemical investigations of estuarine waters in relation to the physical, geological and biological processes occurring in estuaries. Each chapter is written by an expert on the topic with the intention of introducing the reader to the general techniques available for collecting, analysing and interpreting the data from chemical samples. Sufficient detail is given to enable the basic principies to be understood and the location of further information on specific techniques indicated. The topics dealt with include general survey strategy; equipment for obtaining water samples and in situ data; methods for measuring salinity, dissolved oxygen, nutrients, trace elements and many organic compounds; the role of specific-ion electrodes in estuarine analysis and methods of data presentation and interpretation. The book will be of value to anyone with an interest in whilst drawing mainly on information from within the United Kingdom, the general principies presented are applicable to estuarine investigations worldwide. Practical Estuarine Chemistry will be of primary elevance for aquatic chemists, but should also be of use to biologists, physicists, geologists and oceanographers working in estuaries. eng
