Junto con la fundación de Santiago de Guatemala en 1524 se crea el Ayuntamiento, cuyos cargos son proveídos como un honor a los ciudadanos de mérito durante el siglo XVI. Al incrementarse los gastos públicos de la Corona, en el siglo XVIII, tales cargos se ponen a la venta, hecho que delimita y configura la composición social del Cabildo, en la que destaca la presencia de grupos familiares que, a su vez, ocupan lugares en la Iglesia, en el Ejército y otras instancias de poder. En este trabajo se analizan esos núcleos de poder y las relaciones familiares en la alta sociedad en la ciudad de Guatemala durante las últimas décadas del siglo XVIII y principios del XIX.

Concurrently with the founding of Santiago de Guatemala in 1524 the Ayuntamiento (city council) was created. Throughout the sixteenth century, appointment to the city council was an honor, based on merit. During the eighteenth century, due to the rising expenditures of the Crown, these appointments began to be sold, which resulted in the eventual limiting of the social composition of the greater part of the city council to family groups which also occupied positions of importance in the Church, the army, and other prominent organizations. In this article, Palma analyzes these nuclei of power and family relations within the upper classes of Guatemala City during the last decades of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth.
