La primera inmigración de alemanes a Guatemala data de 1834, año en que la Eastern Coast of Central America Commercial and Agricultural Company de Londres obtuvo la concesión de colonizar la Verapaz, Lívingston y Santo Tomás, hecho con el cual comienza el presente estudio, que se extiende en el análisis de la segunda inmigración que se llevó a cabo a partir de la década de 1870 y se asentó en la capital y en las regiones norte y suroccidental. La autora examina las condiciones económicas, políticas y sociales que la propiciaron, así como el papel que habría de jugar el capital alemán en las actividades empresariales, particularmente en la producción cafetalera, y el de la educación.

The first wave of German immigration to Guatemala dated from 1834, the year in which the Eastern Coast of Central America Commercial and Agricultural Company of London obtained a concession to colonize Verapaz, Lívingston, and Santo Tomás. Wagner's study begins with this event, after which she continues with an analysis of the second wave of immigration which took place in the 1870s and which was centered in the capital and the northern and southwestern regions of the country. The author examines the economic, political and social conditions which gave rise to German immigration as well as the role played by German capital in commercial activities, specifically coffee production, and in education.
