This paper examines the history of modern entrepreneurship in Guatemala, its origins, development, economic motivations and relations with the centers of power, from the second half of the nineteenth century through the government of Jorge Ubico. Cambranes focuses his attention on foreign agricultural entrepreneurs involved in coffee production and on the figure of the coffee grower. Entrepreneurs and coffee growers (at times represented by the same person) established the coffee industry in Guatemala and occupied a dominant position in the social, economic, and political life of that country.
