The dynamics of Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wied.), mortality have been the subject of our research for over the last 12 years. Important and interesting results have been found regarding the slowing of mortality rates at old ages, density effects, sex-specific differences, cost of reproduction and factors affecting reproductive and mortality rates. Here we present recent results regarding the relationship between food and reproduction and discuss how this relationship affects the mortality dynamics of adult Medflies. Such dynamics include the reproductive diapause that is triggered by the absence of high quality food (protein rich), the sex-specific mortality oscillations induced by periodic starvation, and the effects of variable food environments on reproduction and longevity. eng
