The purposes of this line of research is to: a) Describe the spatial arrangement of maize-broad bean associations found intensive agriculture in systems as practiced in the subregion San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico, from one typical sample community; b) investigate the production of dry matter and grain when the two species are grown in association; c) elucidate by the means of the LER analysis if the advantages of this association are derived from the mechanism of facilitation or from the principle of competitive production. Four treatmens were established: The monoculture of maize, the monoculture of broad bean and the additive and substitutive associations of both species. Five distinct spatial arrangements of maize and broad bean have been observed in use by subsistence farmer practicing polyculture incorporating other species. In the association operated on the system of competitive production principle, it was found favorable when an additive association was used (LER=1.67) due to the fact that maize assisted the development of the legume without reducing or increasine the growth and yield of the former. The substitutive association was not foud favorable due to the reduction in weight of dry matter and grain production of broad bean brought about by drop in total density of plant population within the policultural system as a whole.
